On December 7, 1941 at 7:53 am, in Honolulu Hawaii, the Japanese attack Pearl Harbor. The suprise attack ended at 9:55. At 1:00 pm the Japanese air craft carriers returned to their naval base in Oahu.The number of lost men or the wounded were astonishing. As a result of the surprise attack 2,403 people died, 1,178 people were wounded and 68 citizens were killed. One hundred eighty eight planes destroyed. Eight battleships either damaged or destroyed as well. The Battleship Arizona got hit and in a few minutes the ship sunk with people still on board, 1,300 people died because of the ship sinking.

Flaherty, helped some of his men to get out of one of the boats that were sinking. Many men lost their lives that day but many men became heros.
